Assistive Canes

Relevant Information:

They are used to reduce the weight on a painful or weak leg, to gain some stability while walking, or “feel” the path ahead, as is the case of the cane used by the blind.Assistive canes are of various types, serving different purposes. The white cane isnot for support, but specifically designed for the blind, to enable him/her “feel” the path ahead. There is a folding cane with several joints that can be folded into a shorter length when not in use. The forearm cane is worn around the forearm for more stability and to shift the weight of the user from the wrist to the forearm. The Quad cane has four ferrules (supports) at the base such that it stands on its own, and is designed to provide a firm base for standing. The choice of assistive cane should be made with the inputs of a medical professional, to ensure that it serves the purpose. It is particularly important that the cane is the proper height for the individual user.

Crutches

Relevant Information:

A crutch is a mobility aid used by persons with short-term injuries or lifelong disabilities to transfer the weight of their body from the legs to the upper body. Crutches are of various types, but the most common ones are the axillary, and the forearm crutches. The underarm or axillary crutches are the most common crutches in Nigeria, used mostly by those with short-term injuries such as fracture. They have a padded top that is held against the ribcage, and beneath the armpit. The forearm crutch also called elbow crutch has a cuff at the top that goes around the forearm, such that it is used by inserting the arm into a cuff and holding a grip.

Prosthetic devices

Relevant Information:

A prosthesis is an artificial device that replaces and restores the normal function of a missing body part, which may be lost through trauma, disease, or congenital conditions. Prosthesis is designed and assembled with the exact measurements of the user, to ensure that it serves the desired needs. This has become very possible and cheaper with 3D printers and robotic technology, but cost and expertise have been a major constraint in Nigeria, such that most prosthesis in Nigeria only provide support, and lack most of the other functions of the missing part of the body.
