Cockroach Control Services

Cockroaches can be found in all homes, but the population of cockroaches in some homes is so high that they constitute not only serious embarrassment, but also a threat to the health and wellbeing of members of the households. Cockroaches multiply in a house that supplies them with sufficient amount of water, shelter and greasy food. Water, as provided by dripping water taps provides the most ideal condition for cockroaches to thrive, because whereas cockroaches can survive for months without food, they are only able to survive a few days without water.

The number of cockroaches in a house can be significantly reduced by depriving them of water, food and entry into the house. These can be achieved by:

  • Repairing all leaking pipes and water taps
  • Cleaning the kitchen, especially the top of stove/gas cookers, and washing of dirty dishes before going to bed
  • Proper storage and disposal of kitchen and other food wastes
  • Use of baits such as boric acid powder, and the mixture of baking soda and sugar
  • As a last resort, the use of insecticides, because of the tendency of cockroaches to develop resistance to the commonly used insecticides.

Cockroach control products

Cockroaches live in large groups, and hid in the darkest corners of the house. They are mainly active in the night; the ones that are seen during the day are those forced out to the open as a result of overcrowding in their hiding places, and it is a sign of their large number in the house. Cockroaches are killed with pesticides of various types that are usually mixed with other things to attract the cockroaches. The mixture is called Roach Baits, and they are of various types, depending on the type of pesticide. The pesticides are very effective against cockroaches because they only not kill the cockroaches that eat the bait or come into contact with the bait, they also kill cockroaches that come into contact with the dead cockroaches. This means that the pesticides are able to kill not once, but multiple times, especially as cockroaches have a habit of dying in the midst of other cockroaches, and are often eaten by other cockroaches.

Many pesticides are effective against cockroaches, including those contained in the common insecticide spray; the following pesticides have been found to be most effective against cockroaches:

  1. Fipronil
  2. Hydramethylnon
  3. Indoxacarb
  4. Boric acid

Fipronil

Fipronil affects the brain of the cockroach making it to run mad, and to contaminate other cockroaches in their hiding place with the pesticide. This results in the death of not only the cockroach, but also those that were contaminated. The affected cockroaches usually die within 24 hours. Fipronil can remain active for up to one year, and can therefore continue to kill cockroaches throughout the period.

Boric Acid Formulations

Boric acid and its sodium borate salts are found in nature and in many household products including pesticides, fertilizers, household cleaners, laundry detergents, and personal care products. Boric acid and its salts have a low toxicity to human beings, causing mostly nausea, vomiting, stomach aches, and diarrhea, when ingested; and skin irritation upon contact with the skin. They are however very toxic to a wide variety of pests, including insects, spiders, mites, algae, molds and fungi; which explains why boric acids and its salts are used in the form of liquids, granules, pellets, tablets, wettable powders, dusts, rods, and baits in the control of these vectors and pests.
