Safedrinking Water

Safedrinking Water

Services for safe drinking water

The drinking of contaminated water causes millions of ill health and deaths every year, all over the world. The contamination is mainly by faeces, due to faulty toilet systems as well as the toxic chemicals produced by industries such as the oil companies that produce lots of toxic chemicals in course of their operation.

The diseases and deaths caused by drinking the contaminated water can be prevented by taking steps to prevent or reduce the contamination not only at the source of the drinking water, but also at the point of use of the water. These are usually achieved by:

  • The sanitary inspection and remediation of the source of drinking water; and
  • The use of various household water purification methods

Sanitary inspection of the source of drinking water seeks to identify the possible sources of contamination of the water, and then carry out an analysis of a sample of the water, to confirm the actual level of contamination. Remedial actions are consequently carried out, based on the results of the water analysis, to purify the water to the level that is clean enough for drinking.

Sanitary inspection is highly recommended for every water facility, especially for private boreholes which are often sited without observing the required spacing from the soakaways that are located both inside the plot, and in the neigbouring plots of land. Studies have shown that some of the boreholes are located so close to soakaway that they get some of their water directly from the soakaway.

Household water purification methods are used to purify the water fetched from such as contaminated sources as river, ponds and polluted wells. They are of various types, but can be grouped into: Water filters and dispensers; and Coagulants and disinfectants.
