Snake Control Services
Snakes are very shy animals that want nothing to do with human beings, and would do everything to avoid any contact with human beings. They only enter human habitation in search of food, especially rats, and in fewer instances in search of shelter, especially cool, damp places. Snakes can therefore be prevented from entering homes by cutting the grasses around the house; keeping away rats, and denying the snakes entry into the house, by sealing off their likely entry points. These actions are useless when the snake is already inside the house, or even suspected to be inside the house. Life in a house with snake is filled with fear, because snakes have a way of living in a house without being noticed; mostly encountered by chance, to the surprise of the occupants of the house. Cases of snake bites recorded in homes are as a result of these chance encounters, and occur as the snake attempts to escape. These so-called escape bites are often without the injection of venoms, especially as most of the snakes found in houses in Nigeria do not have venom. The bites of these snakes are therefore not dangerous, and often do not require medical treatment, apart from assuring the patients that their lives are not at risk.
There are many ways of keeping snakes out of the house, several of which are home-made remedies. Studies have however revealed that most of the remedies, including some high-tech remedies are ineffective, and only appeared to have worked because the snake decided on its own to move away, not always desiring the cross the path of human beings. Most of the remedies have pungent smell, with the mistaken belief that the strong smell would drive away the snake, but the sense of smell of snakes are different from those of human beings, such that snakes have been shown not to even perceive the pungent smell of the anti-snake remedies. Some high-tech repellants that claim to use ultrasound to drive away the snakes are increasingly been introduced into the market. Studies have shown that they are not effective, because snakes don’t have ears, and therefore can’t hear the ultrasound.
Snakes however feel vibrations; hence anything that vibrates the ground such as lawn mowers can drive away snakes. Other methods that have been found to be effective in tackling snakes in the house include snake traps and fumigation with poisonous chemicals such as pesticides and cyanide gas generated with calcium cyanide pellets that kill the snake, but are also harmful to human beings and pets.
