Low self esteem

Do you have a low opinion about yourself? Do you often feel unlovable, awkward or incompetent? Do you often think you are not talented enough for the jobs you desire? Do you often criticize yourself? Are you afraid of trying something new, because you think you can’t succeed? Do you often think people react the way they did because of your glaring deficiencies? You have low self-esteem if you answer yes to any of the above questions.

The need for treatment: Persons with low self-esteem need to take deliberate action to solve the problem. This is because it drains the person’s motivation to take actions required for career progress, which can result in poverty and even mental breakdown. It can also encourage heavy drinking, smoking and use of drugs which can create other problems.

Do you consider your work very stressful? Are you under constant pressure to meet a deadline? Are you under constant pressure to carry out a task for something not to go wrong? Are the demands of your work constantly giving you sleepless nights? Do you often feel overwhelmed by work? Do you often feel the need to take alcohol or any drug to cope with the demands of your work? Your work is indeed very stressful, and is adversely affecting your health, if you answer yes to any of the above questions.

The need for treatment: Persons with obvious signs of work stress need to take deliberate actions to relieve the problem, including seeing a mental health professional. Marital stress

About the health condition: Marriage can be stressful, because it is the wedlock of two persons who have been raised by two different families, of perhaps different background. Couples make efforts to accommodate each other, but sometimes the efforts are not enough, resulting in marriages so stressful that they have adverse health effects on the couples. Signs of these stressful marriages include:

  • A feeling of loneliness, a sign of loss of the companionship of your spouse
  • Not being sexually attracted to your spouse, indicating a lack of emotional intimacy
  • Having sleepless nights as a result of problems in the marriage
  • Being overwhelmed by the problems in the marriage
  • A feeling of the need to take alcohol or any drug to cope with the problems in the marriage

The need for treatment: Marital problems generate a lot of stress and have severe adverse health effects, because the couple share the same home and literally cannot avoid each other. Persons with obvious signs of marital stress need to take deliberate actions to solve the problem, especially in Nigeria where divorce is seriously discouraged. Help can come from a lot of sources including the clergy and mental health professionals, who are specially trained to recognize and resolve the causes of friction.

Name of book: 7 keys to long-term relationship success

Brief description of the book: It’s normal for a couple to quarrel from time to time—just part of what it means to be together. Conflicts and arguments won’t necessarily jeopardize a relationship. In fact, there are times when disagreements can actually bring a couple closer together. The key is in how you and your partner decide to handle the conflict. Couples with poor conflict resolution skills typically engage in Fight, Flight, or Freeze behaviors. They fight and stay mad, sometimes holding grudges for years. They flee and avoid important issues by sweeping them under the rug. Or, after endless arguments with no resolution in sight, they freeze emotionally and shut down. Someone who freezes in a relationship typically goes through the motions on the outside, but has stopped caring on the inside. Successful couples have the ability to solve problems and let it go. They focus on taking care of the issue rather than attacking the person. Even when angry, they find ways to be upset and stay close at the same time. Once the matter is resolved, they forgive and forget. Most importantly, successful couples have the ability to learn and grow through their interpersonal difficulties. Like fine wine, their relationship improves with age and gets better over time.

Depression

About the health condition: Depression is a mood problem associated with the feeling of sadness and loss of interest, so much that it affects the normal day-to-day activities, and creates the feeling that life is not worth living. Depression often manifests in Nigeria as the feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness, hopelessness, worthlessness or guilt, such that the patient or “the bad spirit in him/her” often claim to be responsible for all the bad things that have happened to the patient, family and friends.

The need for treatment: It is normal for someone to be depressed as a result of bereavement and other significant events, but the depression becomes abnormal and requires medical attention if it is causing serious suicide thoughts, or has persisted for more than two weeks. Depression cannot be controlled with just willpower. The patients can’t just “snap out” of it; they often need medication, psychotherapy or both.

Treatment is highly recommended for depression because of the risk to the patient’s life, through suicide, self-mutilation and drug abuse; and the deterioration of family and work relationships, through the altered thoughts that often complicate depression.

Name of book: How to Use the Neuroscience of Fear to End Anxiety, Panic, and Worry

Brief description of the book: Do you ever wonder what is happening inside your brain when you feel anxious, panicked, and worried? In Rewire Your Anxious Brain, psychologist Catherine Pittman and author Elizabeth Karle offer a unique, evidence-based solution to overcoming anxiety based in cutting-edge neuroscience and research. In the book, you will learn how the amygdala and cortex (both important parts of the brain) are essential players in the neuropsychology of anxiety. The amygdala acts as a primal response, and oftentimes, when this part of the brain processes fear, you may not even understand why you are afraid. By comparison, the cortex is the center of “worry.” That is, obsessing, ruminating, and dwelling on things that may or may not happen. In the book, Pittman and Karle make it simple by offering specific examples of how to manage fear by tapping into both of these pathways in the brain. As you read, you’ll gain a greater understanding how anxiety is created in the brain, and as a result, you will feel empowered and motivated to overcome it. The brain is a powerful tool, and the more you work to change the way you respond to fear, the more resilient you will become. Using the practical self-assessments and proven-effective techniques in this book, you will learn to literally “rewire” the brain processes that lie at the root of your fears.

Self-care books

Name of book: The Sleep Book: How to Sleep Well Every Night

Brief description of the book: At risk of sounding overly dramatic, this book has literally changed my life. I bought this book after suffering from major insomnia every night for three months after stopping prescription sleep medication. I had tried everything- OTC medication, herbs, CBT-I and sleep restriction therapy, etc, and I had only succeeded in making my sleep anxiety worse. I was exhausted and felt like my anxiety about sleep had taken control of my life. Then I found this book. It taught me to accept my insomnia and stop fighting it, and I was able to change bedtime into something I looked forward to rather than something I dreaded. The mindfulness exercises helped me to feel at peace even when I didn’t sleep, and after just over a month I have gone from being lucky to get 4 hours of sleep to getting 7-8 hours of sleep a night. Not only that, but the mindset the book teaches has helped me in managing my anxiety during the day as well, so I feel better overall than I ever did with years of therapy and medication.

Lack of motivation

About the health condition: A person suffers from lack of motivation when he/she does not have the energy or desire to do things that he/she recognizes to be important. The need for treatment: Lack of motivation leads to decline in productivity, which can result in retrenchment and financial difficulty. Treatment is therefore needed to get the patient out of the adverse train of events that can result from lack of motivation.

Hopelessness

Hopelessness is an emotion characterised by a lack of hope, optimism and passion, with no expectation of future improvement or success. The person has a negative opinion of him/herself, others and circumstance, and often loses interest in important objects, activities, events or people. Hopelessness sometimes arises as a result of dissatisfying, distressing or negative life events. It can also be as a result of mental health conditions such as depression.

The need for treatment: Hopelessness can result in suicide and decline in productivity, which can result in death, retrenchment and financial difficulty. Treatment is therefore needed to get the patient out of the adverse train of events that can result from the state of hopelessness.

Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is also called substance use disorder. It is the use of a drug or any substance in such a way that it affects the brain and behavior of the person causing health problems, and problems with the work and social interactions of the person. The drug addict is unable to control the use of the drug, and is often prepared to do everything and anything, including crime, to take the drug for the “high” he/she gets from the drug. The most commonly abused drugs/substance in Nigeria include marijuana, Tramadol, glue and codeine. Drug rehabilitation is the treatment given to drug addicts to break them free from the grip of the drugs they abuse. It is usually a packaged programme, with various components designed to give the addict the will power to break free from the grip of the drug. There are also components that help repair the damages inflicted by the drug, and components that teach the addict how to live an enjoyable, stress-free and productive life without the need of the drug being abused.

The need for treatment: Drug rehabilitation is increasing being used as part of the sentencing for drug offenses, with offenders being sentenced to be admitted into a drug rehabilitation programme, instead of being sentenced to prison. This subsection includes qualified, experience and vetted providers of drug rehabilitation services.
